Sleep

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is difficulty initiating, maintaining sleep (frequently awakening at night, or problems returning to sleep), and early-morning awakening. The sleep difficulty occurs at least 3 nights per week and has been lasting for the past 3 months. Despite the opportunity for sleep the sleep difficulties still occur.

What is Hypersomnia?

Hypersomnia is excessive daytime sleepiness despite obtaining adequate sleep. Individuals may nap frequently throughout the day, and the nap provides no relief from symptoms. They may have trouble awakening or feel disoriented.

Other symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Increased Irritation
  • Decreased Energy
  • Restlessness
  • Slow Thinking
  • Slow Speech
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Hallucinations
  • Memory Difficulty

How Do We Treat Insomnia, Hypersomnia, and Difficulty Sleeping?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Sleep Hygiene, and relaxation techniques are the treatment of choice to improve sleep. Medications can be used, but they can actually be counterproductive to improving sleep and can lead to an increase in sleep disturbance over time.

Our providers have experience and training in sleep medicine to provide these evidence-based therapies to improve sleep onset, quality, and duration.
