What is Self-Esteem ?

Self-esteem is confidence in one’s self-worth and abilities. Low self-esteem is when we evaluate ourselves negatively and can lead to anxiety and depression symptoms. Low self-esteem may be displayed by a negative outlook, lack of confidence, inability to express needs, wants, and desires, focus on ones weaknesses, have excessive feelings of shame, depression, or anxiety, believing others are better, trouble accepting positive feedback, and have an intense fear of failure. High self-esteem is evaluating ourselves too positively without acknowledgement of our failures or short-comings, and can lead to narcissism and a sense of entitlement.

 

What does healthy self-esteem look like?

Healthy self-esteem individuals have a good sense of who they are and tend to be confident, have the ability to say no, have a positive outlook, see their strengths and weaknesses and accept them, have the ability to express their needs, wants, and desires, and negative experiences do not impact their overall perspective of life.

 

 

Self-Esteem Treatment

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Existential Therapy, and Positive Psychology are evidence-based treatments to help improve self-esteem. These therapies address changing negative thoughts and behaviors, identifying triggers to low self-esteem, increasing self-care and positive self-talk, assertiveness training, and setting healthy boundaries with others and situations.
