Relationship Conflicts

Part of the human experience is having relationships with others. There are many different types of relationships which can include family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and pets. Relationship conflicts can arise due to differences in habits, upbringing, cultural background, and personality and character traits. Avoiding conflict can lead to anger, stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms; and reduce our ability to assert ourselves and learn how to manage and resolve conflict. Conflict avoidance may actually increase our anger and resentment towards other, because we are unable to confront others and assert our thoughts and feelings.

Treatment for Relationship Conflicts

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with assertiveness training, problem solving skills, and anger management are evidence-based treatments to improve conflict resolution. CBT addresses changing ones thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to improve mood and reduce discomfort. Assertiveness training can improve interpersonal skills and self- esteem by having the ability to express our thoughts, feelings, needs, and desires in a respectful nonaggressive manner. Anger management improves our skills on how to manage our anger reactions and behaviors, rather than try to suppress anger. Individuals can learn how to express their anger in a health manner without losing control.

Our clinicians are trained and have experience in providing these evidence- based treatments.
